Westlawn Art Curriculum
Course Overview
The elementary art program is designed to help students gain an interest and appreciation of the arts while developing skills and a sense of accomplishment. In grades kindergarten through fifth grade, students are provided with the opportunity to explore a variety of media including: painting, drawing, design, printmaking, fibers, sculpture, and ceramics. Aside from exploring a variety of art media and techniques, the students also learn about many artists and styles from history. Over their six years at Westlawn, students are expected to build in their vocabulary and artistic skill, as well as their understanding and appreciation of the visual arts.
Grading
The four grades that a student can receive are exceeding (EX), secure (SC), developing (DV), and needs strengthening (NS). For each project that a student completes a detailed rubric is used to assess the student work. At the end of each quarter the grades are averaged in each of the standards. The art standards are as follows:
1. Produces quality artwork in a variety of media that demonstrates specific art making techniques through their craftsmanship and attention to detail
2. Communicates their knowledge of art concepts, art vocabulary, and/or art history
3. Demonstrates responsibility in the art room and shows respect to themself, others, and their environment
4. Engages and persists in their learning and art making processes by showing methods of problem solving
5. Blends artistic knowledge with personal experience and interest to make their own art
6. Student generates and organizes their ideas through a creative and innovative thought process
7. Interprets artistic works and applies select criteria when responding to their own artwork or the artwork of others
8. Student selects artwork for presentation with thoughtful consideration of how the artwork will be perceived by the viewer
